ANTH 2190

Organizations for Change: Charities and Nonprofits

Students will study the role of charities and nonprofit organizations, understood to be 'third sector' organizations concerned with addressing problems such as poverty, social justice, and the environment. They will explore the emergence and role of these nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in communities both locally and globally. They will come to understand the various roles that charities, nonprofits, and NGOs fill in providing services, promoting particular values, campaigning on public issues, and forming the basis for community initiatives. Students will analyze and demonstrate their familiarity with organizational structure, ethical practices, and the role of anthropology in understanding and contributing to this sector.
